Tips For Making Healthy New Year's Resolutions Stick
In the New Year roughly one in three people resolve to make themselves better in some way. Many people set out to make lifestyle changes like exercising more or eating healthier with the best intentions. But how do you make healthy resolutions that stick? Wellness staff at the Y weigh in with their best advice.
Make a commitment. Where do you start when you've decided to make a healthy lifestyle change? The first step is to commit. Joining a wellness center serves two purposes: you will open the door to finding healthy activities you enjoy and you've invested your money and time in your health, which will help you stay accountable. January is a great time to join the Y; we are offering $25 off anything at the Y--your first month's dues, a program like fencing or climbing class, even our after school care program.
Don't change everything at once. Change is hard. Start where you are and make small changes each week. You may not run a marathon before you've ever run a lap around Sullivan Field, but if you start with small goals, you will be surprised how quickly they add up to what you're trying to accomplish. Depending on your individual interests, incorporate changes such as taking a yoga or stretching class to improve flexibility and balance, or trying a higher intensity group exercise class than you're used to (being sure to monitor your heart rate and take breaks as needed).
Have fun with it. There are so many ways to get your heart rate pumping that there is no reason to be bored or unhappy with your exercise routine. At the Y, we have seniors shaking in SilverSneakers and Pickleball, other members grooving in Y Ride, our version of Spinning, and many people who love the calming and strengthening effects of yoga. It's about finding an activity you love so that you will look forward to exercise.
Be specific. Don't just say you need to workout more. Schedule time in your calendar for exercise just like you would any other commitment. Make time for a cycling class, set up a time to lift weights with a friend, or schedule an appointment with a personal trainer. The Y's new mobile app lets you add group exercise classes directly to your calendar (visit www.laymca.org to download). If you need more one-on-one support to reach your goals, our wellness coaches can help you get the results you need with a personalized approach--consultations are free!
Know that it's okay to take "me" time. It can be hard for parents to make time for exercise. At the Y, we offer free Child Watch with family memberships so kids can have fun, be active and make new friends while their parents exercise. The Y also offers a wide variety of options for families to spend time active together.
Make a plan and stick to it. Y members receive three free New Member Coaching Sessions when they join. During the sessions you meet with a Wellness Coach to discuss your goals and create a plan to help you accomplish them. Progress will happen. Creating a plan you can stick to is critical to your success in making a healthy lifestyle change. Without a plan you don't know where you're starting from or how you'll get where you want to go.
Give yourself a pat on the back along the way. Don't wait until you've reached your ultimate goal to reward yourself. Treat yourself for meeting goals, even small ones. Those (non-food!) rewards add up to a successful path. You can always plan a special reward for reaching your final goal.
Being healthy means more than simply being physically active. It's about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The Y is a place where you can work toward that balance by challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends through our lifelong learning programs, or bringing your loved ones closer together through our many family-centered activities. At the Y, it's not about the activity you choose as much as it is about the benefits of living healthier on the inside as well as the outside. Zumbatomics-Zumba for kids
For Girls and Boys ages 6-12 years old. Wednesdays 2:15pm-3:00pm at the main Y. FREE to all youth! Parents are required to sign a liability form before participating in the class. This class uses the same dance and fitness moves used in regular Zumba such as salsa, merengue, and hip-hop in a kid-friendly way.

Y Opens Class Site in White Rock
The Family YMCA will begin offering classes April 7 at their new site located at 106-A Longview in White Rock. The White Rock YMCA will be open to Y members as a program and group fitness site. Yoga will be the inaugural class offering and will be held on Monday and Wednesdays starting at 5:30 pm. Additional fitness classes will be offered in White Rock pending demand and the availability of instructors. White Rock class participants must be Y members; memberships will not be sold at the White Rock location but can be secured at the Y's main facility. To help celebrate the opening and in support of helping a student complete practicum hours, the Y will be hosting free Swedish or Deep Tissue Therapeutic Massages at this location on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27. Massages will also be available in Los Alamos on Saturday and Sunday April 19 and April 20. Y Members can call the Y to reserve a massage time at 662-3100.
