In 2017, The Family YMCA is partnering with local orgazations to offer a Y Bandelier Corps, a summer youth employment program emphasizing conservation and trail building. Applications will be taken until 8 pm on March 13, 2017. Positions are open to youth ages 16 to 25.
The Y Bandelier Corps (YBC) is a partnership between Bandelier National Monument, the Volunteer Task Force, Delle Foundation and Pajarito Trail Fest. The jobs will provide service-learning and environmental education opportunities for area youth as well as college credit.
YBC will expose participants to a range of possible federal lands jobs through hands-on work such as trail maintenance, historic preservation, and natural resource management. Youth will also have opportunities to learn about conservation, environmental science and policy, and careers in land management through formal and informal educational programs. More information is on the first page of the Application Package below.
From 2009 to 2016, the state of New Mexico's Youth Conservation Corps provided funding to the Y to hire TRAIL crews to improve existing footpaths damaged by recent fires and to create new sustainable trails. No funding was awarded to the Y in 2017, but the Y will apply again in future years.
