THE FAMILY YMCA Los Alamos, NM

Y Corps

From 2009 to 2016, and again in 2018, the state of New Mexico's Youth Conservation Corps has provided funding to The Family YMCA to hire TRAIL crews to improve existing footpaths damaged by recent fires, and to create new sustainable trails. The 2018 grant employs youth ages 14 to 25 for trail work during the Summer of 2018. Applications for employment closed March 12. Approximately 27 crew members and three leaders (must have experience) will be employed to improve several local community foot and bike paths.

When the YCC awards a grant to The Family YMCA, job applications will be available from the end of November through early March. The Y takes applications all during this period and strongly encourages early application. The Y opens applications in November so college youth may apply when home from break, and so high school students may begin the application during their winter break.

Youth must be unemployed at the time of hire and be New Mexico residents.

In 2017, The Family YMCA partnered with Bandelier National Monument, the Volunteer Task Force, Delle Foundation, UNM-LA and Pajarito Trail Fest to hold a summer jobs program for youth ages 16-24. The work provided service-learning and environmental education opportunities, including a college credit.
