Kathak

This East Indian Classical Dance involves combinations of hand and foot movements set to combinations of beats. The class covers hand-foot coordination, footwork, choreography, self-discipline and Indian culture through an artistic form of physical exercise.

Kathak Classes restart October 4, 2020!

Beginner/Junior Kathak: (ONLINE CLASS ONLY) 2:00 – 3:00pm
Intermediate Kathak: 3:00 – 4:00pm
Advanced/Senior Kathak: 4:00 – 5:00pm
$36 per month / $18 per month for Y members

Online Kathak Class:
The beginner/junior level Kathak class will be taught online via live Zoom videoconferencing sessions. Registered participants will be emailed the online class login information and should be prepared to log in 5 minutes before the class begins.

Live Kathak Classes:

The Intermediate and advanced/senior Kathak classes will be taught in-person in the YMCA gymnasium.

These classes follow COVID-19 safety practices pursuant to current government orders and guidelines. For more information, see the Return to Play Operating Protocol for YMCA Programs. All program participants must sign a COVID-19 waiver before participating.

About the instructor
Alina Deshpande trained in Kathak, a classical Indian dance form,
for 12 years before she came to the US from India. She has been
teaching at the Family Y since 2004 and is the director and
choreographer of the annual Dances of India productions, which
are held are the Duane Smith Auditorium in Los Alamos.



 

 

Bharatanatyam-not currently offered

Classical dance from South India combines rhythm, expression, postures, and drama in an attempt to embody the divine beauty, charm, rhythms, and symbols that exist in heaven as a means of spiritual elevation.

Sundays, 4:00-5:00pm
$36 per month / $18 per month for Y members

Irish Dance-not currently offered

Classes are open to boys and girls from 5 years of age up, as well as to adults. No previous dance experience is necessary. Dancers advance at their own pace, with class placements made at the discretion of the teacher. New students are accepted throughout the year.
