About Shoshin Ryu Jujutsu

Shoshin Ryu is a traditional Japanese system of Jujutsu practiced at The Family YMCA in Los Alamos, New Mexico. It blends bujutsu (effective martial techniques) with budo (personal character development), creating a well-rounded approach to martial training and personal growth.
Shoshin Ryu at The Family YMCA is led by Young Moon and is part of a national network of 14 Shoshin Ryu schools across the United States. We offer classes for children and adults in a supportive, non-competitive environment focused on confidence, discipline, and practical skill development.
Unlike many martial arts that emphasize either combat effectiveness or personal philosophy, Shoshin Ryu integrates both. Practical technique provides honest feedback, you either apply it correctly or you don’t, while budo principles ensure students develop restraint, balance, and clarity alongside physical skill.
Shoshin Ryu is a classical martial art that preserves traditional training methods while incorporating modern understanding of movement, strategy, and real-world self-defense. The system emphasizes personal excellence, adaptability, and lifelong learning.

Building Skilled Martial Artists

Shoshin Ryu develops martial artists who are capable, disciplined, and self-aware, individuals who can defend themselves without seeking conflict. Training encourages continual improvement of both technical skill and personal understanding.
Students gain a broad foundation that allows them to recognize and adapt to related disciplines such as Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Filipino Martial Arts. This breadth of training builds versatility, confidence, and respect for other systems.

Techniques and Training

Shoshin Ryu training includes empty-hand and weapon-based techniques, taught through:

  • Kihon waza (fundamental techniques)

  • Kata (forms)

  • Goshinjutsu (practical self-defense applications)

Techniques emphasize efficiency, natural movement, and sound physical principles. Training covers striking, throwing, joint locks, chokes, ground techniques, falling and recovery skills, and tactical strategy.
Mental training is also an integral part of the curriculum, helping students develop focus, composure, awareness, and clarity under pressure—skills that extend beyond the dojo into everyday life.

Traditional Heritage. Modern Application.

Shoshin Ryu is a living martial tradition that adapts to modern challenges while honoring its historical roots. Practitioners focus not on display or competition, but on honest training, personal growth, and the development of a calm, capable mind.
Shoshin Ryu—the Truthful Heart Tradition—is ultimately experienced through practice. Its meaning is discovered through training, reflection, and commitment to continual improvement.
